Kuma. Complete Works 1988–Today
Description
Following in the footsteps of Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito, and Fumihiko Maki, Kengo Kuma has brought new lightness and vitality to Japanese architecture. Drawing inspiration from the modernist skyscrapers of the 20th century, Kuma developed a sustainable architectural approach, traveling across Japan to create buildings that blend harmoniously with their surroundings. With a deep respect for tradition and a forward-thinking mindset, Kuma’s “materialist” philosophy champions tactile architecture with innovative structures, appealing surfaces, and fluid forms that reconnect people with the physicality of buildings.
Kuma’s work showcases his commitment to local craftsmanship and sustainable materials. Notable projects include the China Academy of Art’s Folk Art Museum, built with discarded roof tiles; a moss and birch wood chapel in Nagano, Japan; and the V&A Dundee, inspired by the cliffs of Scotland. Known for his extraordinary sensitivity to space, light, and texture, Kuma reveals the unique qualities of materials, from the lightness of stone at Chokkura Plaza to the soft aluminium roof at Yangcheng Lake Tourism Transport Centre, which draws on the ancient art of thatching.
Most recently, Kuma designed the National Stadium of Japan for the 2020 Olympic Games, aiming for a design that would help transform Tokyo back into a city of concrete, marking a new direction for Japanese architecture.
In this expansive monograph, with nearly 500 illustrations including photographs, sketches, and plans, Kuma takes us through his entire career, detailing his most significant projects and works in progress.
